Abstract:
Glacier melt studies is one of the research activity of the
Mountain Hydrology Division of the National Institute of
Hydrology. The scientists of this division have participated in
several glacier expeditions such as Chhota Shigri Glacier
Expedition, 1986, 1987 and 1988 and carried out hydrological
investigations. A glacier expedition was organised for Kolhai
Glacier (J&K) in 1989. Kolhai Glacier in Kashmir is known to be
the major source of water for the West Lidder river.
The J&K Irrigation Department requested the National
Institute of Hydrology to carry out hydrological studies of
Kolhai Glacier. This was an multidisciplinary expedition
organised by National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee; J&Kirrigation
Irrigation and Flood Control Department with the participation of
Survey of India, Dehradun.
This report incorporating the report on surveys carried out
by SOI has been prepared by Dr. Pratap Singh, Scientist 'B'of
Mountain Hydrology Division.
