dc.description.abstract Development of water resources is imperative for a developing country like India to meet the demand for food and fibre for its millions of people. The overall need for water use has been discussed along with the conflicts vis.a.vis environment. Various adverse impacts of water resources projects on environment are summarised. Planning, policies and programmes adopted so far are briefly discussed. The future projections of challenges and of issues valid for the next century have been outlined en_US
