Abstract:
India is likely to face a major challenge in the management of freshwater in view of rapidly rising population and increasing agricultural, industrial
and other requirements. As the economy of the country is currently witnessing rapid growth, management of freshwater resources becomes all the
more important. This paper reviews the status of freshwater resources, their quantity and quality, demands as well as the management related problems
in India. A series of actions that are necessary for a long-term solution of the problem are suggested with a view that scarcity of freshwater does not
become a hindrance in national economic development and food security.
