Abstract:
An attempt has been made for a hypothetical case to develop an optimal pumping strategy to contain a contaminant in an aquifer. The study area consists of an industry having a hazardous waste landfill. Two sides of the area are surrounded by a small stream/drain that supplies water continuously to the aquifer. The land fill having four observations cum pumping wells surrounds a contaminant plume for continuous monitorin. of contaminant. The leachate from the landfill contaminated the ground water nearly 800 tn` area and this contaminant plume is moving further. The objective of the study was to contain contaminant from further contamination of the aquifer. A MODFLOW software was used to simulate the response curves for drawdown and withdrawal for the data pertaining to the drawdown at each well due to pumping at one well at each time. From the data, a relationship between the discharge and drawdown was fitted. A code was developed using General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) for modeling linear, nonlinear and mixed integer optimization problems to arrive optimal pumping values for these wells such that containment of contaminant is arrived. The total simulation carried out for 30 days. The same concept can be applied to a similar real problem with a little modification.
