Abstract:
The groundwater regime in the vicinity of sea is often prone to seawater ingress. The indiscriminate exploitation of groundwater, particularly from the shallow aquifer, may induce seawater intrusion. It is therefore, necessary to understand the behavior of the aquifer in the vicinity of the sea and develop sustainable withdrawal scheme, which does not attract the seawater. An integrated approach namely geophysical, hydrogeological and chemical study has helped in characterizing shallow aquifer system at beach side near Sadras to evaluate groundwater regime. The groundwater regime is simulated using numerical model SUTRA2004. The effect of seawater ingress is explored considering various groundwater withdrawal and a sustainable scheme is suggested.
