Abstract:
Since the popularization of the Internet and mobile telephony, there has been rising interest in the development community to use information communication technologies (ICTs); especially web based technologies. The use of ICTs have improved transparency, accountability, and public participation within many sectors, including water an environment. Even though we are still in the early stages of understanding what ICT can really do for development, a number of initial successes have shown ICT to enable the rapid transfer of knowledge to segments of society that were previously without.
Web-aided education in various schools, colleges and higher education institutions, distance education programmes, E-learning, training and research programmes are making a big change in awareness and education about water and environmental issues.
Various web portals are providing now far more information on environmental issues to a large segment of society. Present paper will try to find out how social media (Facebook, twitter, WhatsApp; etc.) is playing its role in water and environmental education and conservation.
The internet is being taken to such a large population as a means of two-way connectivity, solicitation and delivery, it is seeing huge changes in areas like e-education and water-environment.
Paper will study that which major web portal are providing educational contents on water-
environment conservation and Will also study comparative effects of some. As a case study, an effort will be made to highlight the content, methods of communication, accessibility in society, use and impact of the content of Hindi Water Portal, whose visitor-ship is more than two million monthly. And how and how much they are contributing to get rid of environmental problems and good management, from flood to famine-drought management.
