dc.description.abstract Optimization is one of the most powerful and popular technique for solving various problems associated with the operation of a reservoir. During the past few years, its use has grown tremendously due to wider availability of computer and the solution techniques. In the present report a comprehensive review of optimization techniques as applied to study the various aspects of operation of reservoirs is made. The theories of linear programming, non linear programming and dynamic programming have been discussed in detail. This follows a review of important works which have used linear programming and dynamic programming as solution techniques for analysis and solution of problems of reservoir operation. Multi objective optimization is also becoming popular nowadays. This aspect has also been discussed and two important techniques for solving multi objective optimization problems have been discussed. A comprehensive bibliography is given at the end for reference purposes. en_US
