India is blessed with a rich and vast diversity of natural resources, water being one of them. Water is nature's most wonderful, abundant and useful compound. There are many essential elements for the existence of living beings; water is rated to be of the greatest importance. Without food, humans can survive for a number of days, but without water one cannot survive for more than a day. Water is not only essential for the lives of animals and plants, but also occupies a unique position in industries. Groundwater is an important source of water supply throughout the world. Groundwater occurs almost everywhere beneath the earth surface not in a single widespread aquifer but in thousands of local aquifer systems and compartments that have similar characters. Knowledge of the occurrence, replenishment, and recovery of groundwater has special significance in arid and semi-arid regions due to discrepancy in monsoonal rainfall, insufficient surface waters and over drafting of groundwater resources.en_US
