The Himalayan-Karakoram Mountain chain forms an important mountain region between the Indian ocean basin and the highland of Tibet. The summer monsoon rainfall and the strong high pressure field called 'Tibetan high' have determining climatic effects not only in this region, but also over entire Northern parts of the country. The Department of Science and Technology as part of a initiative in the International Year of Mountains conceived U-PROBE with 'Mountain Meteorology' as theme in Uttarakhand State. PROBE is short form of Participation of youth in Real-time/ field Observation to Benefit the Education being implemented by students, teachers, research scientists and Set T agencies. This paper describes Meteorological Observation System in Himalayan Region under U-Probe for education and climate change mitigation strategies. Organization structure and the role of academic institutions like colleges, universities and IlTs in the project is highlighted. The initial scientific results are presented and the future prospects for expansion of the model are discussed.en_US
