Abstract: The crucial role of water as a vital resource is discussed with emphasis on development and management of water resources of India as per the National Water Policy guidelines. The importance of Hydrology in dealing with various problems in water sector is critically examined. The significant achievements of UNESCO's programme in hydrological education and status of hydrological education and training in India is briefly reviewed. The status of R&D activities in hydrology and constraints in development of scientific hydrology in the country are also discussed. Some of the important hydrology related issues and thrust areas for R&D activities are listed.
