Abstract: "Water is a prime natural resource, a basic human need and precious national asset". The ground water resource constitutes the most important, dependable and ubiquitous component of the total water resources. The methodology for ground water resource estimation has undergone a continuous change depending upon additional data generated through various hydrogeologicai studies and proper understanding of hydrogeological situation of various geological environments, The 'Groundwater Estimation Committee 1984', constituted by Government of India has recommended the norms for ground water resources estimation based on the experience gained and review of the data collected by various organisations engaged in ground water survey and development. The committee recommends the computation of resources utilising water level fluctuation methods. The norms, for normalisation of monsoon recharge to account for surplus and deficit rainfall year, recharge due to seepage from canals, return seepage from irrigation fields. seepage from tanks etc. have been recommended. The recommendation for apportioning the ground water resources for various uses has also been made. The present paper, besides dealing with the methodology of ground water resources in rouge in the country, brings out the necessity of data base refinement to arrive at reliable ground water estimates.
