dc.description.abstract | In recent times the alarming proportions of water quality deterioration necessitate rapid monitoring for efficient changes to prevent further deterioration as well as cleanse our polluted water resources. The ground water which was supposed to be almost pollution free till recently is also being polluted through various contaminant sources. More-over, surveillence of water quality is an important activity for multiple uses such as irrigation, water supply etc. and for the production of aquatic environment and ecosystem. The intensive use of natural resources and the large production of wastes in modern society often pose a threat to ground water quality and has resulted in many incidents of ground water contamination. The present paper discusses the status of ground water pollution in India, the sources of ground water contamination including land disposal of solid wastes, sewage disposal of land, pollution due to agricultural activities, leakages and spills and other forms of ground water pollution. The basics of migration of ground water contaminants in saturated and unsaturated zones have also been discussed. It has been concluded that the ground water storages are our country's precious resource banks and every care should be taken to prevent further pollution of such natural storages | en_US |
