Abstract: Because of high temporal and spatial variability of rainfall in the country, it is essential to utilize the available water resources in the optimal manner. Judicious reservoir operation is an important aspect for this purpose. Reservoirs are constructed to serve for conservation and flood control requirements. In India, reservoirs are operated to serve various conservation purposes like irrigation, hydropower generation, domestic and industrial supply and minimum flow requirements in the downstream reach. The present report describes a software which has been developed for simulating the operation of a multireservoir system for various conservation purposes for each reservoir. An operation policy in the form of different rule levels in different months is input to the model. The model simulates the system in accordance with the given rule curves and performs the reliability analysis. Detailed operation tables are also prepared for each structure which can be used to systematically modify the rule curves till the optimum result is achieved. The report describes the approach used in the software and how to prepare the input data for a particular system. The various variables used in the program are also explained. A listing of a sample input data file for a multireservoir system along with the corresponding output file is included in the report. A listing of the program has also been included.
