In flood frequency analysis, estimation of return periods of extreme values of discharge, water levels etc., are computed using different distribution functions. Gumbel distribution is one of such widely used distribution which fits observed data of many rivers well. There are a number of different estimation procedures. Historical data of different rivers of West Bengal are considered in this study. In this paper a comparative study of the different procedures of parameter estimation for the Gumbel distribution has been made.en_US
