Abstract: Interpreted data of fifty vertical electrical soundings carried out in the Mahanadi basin (Orissa), are analysed for resolving the resistivities of saline and fresh water aquifers. Difficulties and constraints encountered with the resistivity data interpretation and resolution of the saline and fresh water aquifers are illustrated. A systematic study and analysis of Daar-Zarrouk parameters (Longitudinal unit conductance S) of the saline and fresh water zones identified by integrating the vertical electrical sounding data and the electrical borehole log data, is carried out. The resolution of the Daar-Zarrouk parameter and that of the resistivity data interpretation are compared and the manifold improvement in the resolution provided by the Daar-Zarrouk parameter is demonstrated. Significance of the Daar-Zarrouk parameter namely the longitudinal electrical conductance (S), in resolving the 'saline and fresh water aquifers in a convincing, appreciably reliable and constraint free environment are discussed. Scope for utilizing the findings for analysing large data representing regional scenario are projected.
